Engaging Muslims: Religion, Cultures, PoliticsBooks October 2007 NOVEMBER 2007 Those involved in the Engaging Muslims Project recommend the following films.[1] Check libraries for availability. America at a Crossroads: The Muslim Americans. (PBS Home Video, 2007). America at a Crossroads is a series of 11 films hosted by journalist Robert MacNeil. The episode on Muslims Americans explores the diversity of Muslims in America today, focusing on communities' experience after 9/11. (60 minutes, WETA Washington D. C.) Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain. (PBS, 2007). This film takes viewers on an epic journey back into one of the most captivating and important periods of world history, a centuries-long period when Muslims, Christians and Jews inhabited the same far corner of Western Europe and thrived. Here were the very roots of the European Renaissance. But the fragile union dissipated, destroyed by greed, fear and intolerance. (117 minutes) NOW with Bill Moyers: Islam-Facing East, Facing West-John Esposito of the Struggles of Islam. (Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2007). The series with Bill Moyers has four parts, and the other parts have not been reviewed but likely are as fine as this part with John Esposito. They focus on Islam in Asia, where the vast majority of all Muslims live. The conflict within Islamic countries among fundamentalists and the moderate mainstream is considered, along with concerns in the war on global terrorism. (23 minutes) Stories of Women in Kabul. (Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2006). The producers were granted limited access to Kabul's Garden of Women, perhaps the only public place in Afghanistan where men are not welcome. A women's prison is also visited. The women in these settings demonstrate how far Afghanistan must go to overcome its repressive and war-ravaged history. (27 minutes) Perspectives on Islam: Discovery and Discussion. (Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2006). This program offers 15 stand-alone segments, or "lecture launchers," on a wide range of subjects concerning Islam. The program provides an introduction to Islamic beliefs and practices, as well as reporting on timely contemporary issues. (117 minutes) Three Faiths, One God: Judaism, Christianity, Islam. (Auteur Productions, Ltd, 2005). This documentary program by Gerald Krell and Meyer Odze compares similarities and differences in religious beliefs and practices that Islam has with Christianity and Judaism. It also examines how people of goodwill in the Abrahamic faith community are coming to terms with historical conflicts that impact their lives today. It is available on DVD at http://www.threefaithsonegod.com/ . Inside Islam. (New Video, 2002). Interviews with Islamic scholars and theologians highlight this important, illuminating look at a religion mired in controversy. Experts explore the challenges facing Islam today, including a crisis of authority and deep divisions among many sects. (100 minutes, The History Channel) Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet. (PBS, 2002). The dramatic story of Muhammad, who changed world history in 20 years and continues to influence the lives of a billion people, will challenge prevailing perceptions of Islam. This thorough portrait of Islam's founder and prophet, based on historical records and modern interpretations by followers, takes viewers into American Muslims' homes, mosques, and workplaces, then journeys to ancient Middle Eastern sites where it all began. (120 minutes) Islam: Empire of Faith. (PBS Home Video, 2000). This film is narrated by actor Ben Kingsley. It tells the spectacular story of the great sweep of Islamic power and faith during its first 1,000 years-from the birth of the Prophet Muhammed to the peak of the Ottoman Empire under the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent. (160 minutes, Gardner Films) Islam: There is No God But God. (BBC, 1978). This program was produced in 1970 for the series Long Search. As a basic introduction to Islam, it has stood the test of time. In this program, travel to Egypt and explore the Islamic experience in a oasis village 50 miles from Cairo at a wedding, in a market town for dawn prayers, and in Cairo itself. It is available on DVD at http://www.abrosevideo.com/ . (52 minutes)
