Engaging Muslims: Religion, Cultures, Politics

What can you do to prepare for the Engaging Muslims: Religion, Cultures, Politics Community Education program and events?

We asked Dr John Borelli that very question. We are glad to share his recommendations with you! Here is the list of books he recommends to those coming to our programs. You might want to choose from among them.

A book to use as a primer:
Esposito, John L. What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2002.
It is a useful question and answer book prepared for American readers following 9/11/01 with a short glossary and suggestions for further reading.

Also recommended:
Hewer, C.T.R. Understanding Islam. The First Ten Steps. London: SCM Press, 2006.

Mallon, Elias D. Islam. What Catholics Need to Know. Resource for Catholic Administrators and Religious Educators in Serving Interreligious Dialogue. Washington, DC: National Catholic Education Association, 2006.
A mixture of information on Islam, the history of relations, and current dialogues.

Nasr, Sayyed Hossein. Islam: Religion, History, and Civilization. San Francisco: HarperSanFrancisco, 2003.
By an Iranian Shi’ite who integrates Shi’ism into the broader Islamic picture in a manner not found in many other works with outstanding chapters on practice, ethics, institutions and schools of thought and Africa, often neglected in standard works.

Renard, G. John. Responses to 101 Questions on Islam. New York: Paulist Press, 1998.
A handy question and answer book that covers the range of usual questions western readers, mainly Christians, often ask and offering comments, at times, from a comparative perspective.

Sonn, Tamara. A Brief History of Islam. Oxford: Blackwell Publishing, 2004.
A brief chronological survey of standard themes in a somewhat historical format.

Speight, R. Marston. God is One: The Way of Islam. 2nd ed. National
Council of Churches of Christ—USA, New York: Friendship Press, 2001.
Prepared specifically for use in Christian congregations and sold on the website of the NCCC-USA, this was the first good introduction for U. S. Christians, now updated.
